Big Blue Bus will detour Route 1 all day Sunday, Aug. 23, so the Ocean Park Farmers Market can spread across Main Street for the first time in the market's history.

The detour runs from 5:30 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m., according to a service alert posted by Big Blue Bus on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Main Street itself closes to vehicle traffic from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the event.

Here's what riders need to know:

Southbound (toward Venice): Three stops will be skipped — Main St. & Ocean Park Blvd., Main St. & Hill St. and Main St. & Marine St. Riders should use Main St. & Hollister Ave. or Main St. & Rose Ave. instead.

Northbound (toward Santa Monica): Two stops will be skipped — Main St. & Marine St. and Main St. & Hill St. The service alert lists Main St. & Ocean Park Blvd. among the alternate northbound stops. It also lists Main St. & Marine St. as an alternate, though that stop appears on both the skipped and alternate lists, so riders heading toward Santa Monica should plan on boarding at Ocean Park Blvd. to be safe.

The bus detour begins 30 minutes before the road officially closes, giving Big Blue Bus time to stage the reroute.

The street closure makes room for the Ocean Park Association's test run of a new format. As we reported Aug. 13, the nonprofit civic group is trying out a full street-market layout on Main Street, with the possibility of making it permanent. The OPA discussed the move at its July 13 monthly meeting at the Ocean Park Library, 2601 Main St.

Riders who typically board at the affected stops should allow a few extra minutes to walk to the alternates. The detour applies only to Aug. 23; regular Route 1 service resumes the following day.
