The Ocean Park Farmers Market will spill onto Main Street for the first time on Sunday, Aug. 23, closing the corridor to vehicle traffic for 10 hours and giving neighbors a taste of what a permanent street-market setup could look like.

The Ocean Park Association announced the event in its Aug. 13 newsletter, calling it a "test run" of moving the Sunday market from its usual location onto Main Street itself. The street will be closed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., and more than a dozen food trucks are expected to line the route.

The city's Main Street Entertainment Zone will also be activated, allowing adults 21 and older to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating bars and walk the corridor drink in hand. Bars in the zone include Ashland Hill, Circle Bar, Library Alehouse, Tavern on Main, The Galley and The Victorian, among others.

The idea first surfaced publicly at the OPA's Monday, July 13 monthly meeting, where it was listed as a discussion topic. Newsletter author Sean Besser wrote that the August meeting included a dedicated segment on the logistics of moving the market onto Main Street, with a full recording posted to YouTube.

Main Street has hosted several street closures this summer. The Summer Soulstice Festival shut the corridor on June 20, and the city's State of the City festival closed it again on July 23. Hunter Hall, executive director of the Main Street Business Improvement Association, said in July ahead of the State of the City event that the Entertainment Zone "creates new ways for people to experience the area, discover local favorites and spend time in one of Santa Monica's most vibrant neighborhoods."

The Aug. 23 market marks the first time the weekly farmers market itself will occupy the street rather than its regular off-street footprint. The OPA has framed the day as a trial. If it goes well, the format could become permanent on the corridor.

The exact blocks to be closed have not been announced. Previous Main Street events have shut sections ranging from Strand Street to Pier Avenue or from Ocean Park Boulevard to Hollister Avenue, depending on the event's size.
