Low-income families can now apply for public housing in Santa Monica after the Los Angeles County Development Authority opened registration Monday for 41 units at the Santa Monica Family property.
The waiting list is one of 16 site-based lists the LACDA opened countywide on Aug. 17. But the Santa Monica list carries a hard cap: it will close once 1,000 applications come in or on Sept. 16 at 5 p.m., whichever hits first.
Residents accepted into the program pay no more than 30% of their adjusted monthly gross income for rent, and the Santa Monica Family property is classified as a general occupancy site serving families rather than seniors. It is one of six family properties among the 16 lists; the remaining 10 are elderly-designated.
How to apply
Registration is available online at harp.lacda.org or by phone at (626) 586-1522, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants may register for more than one of the 16 waiting lists based on eligibility.
One rule to note: if a registrant is offered a unit from any waiting list they selected and rejects it, their name will be removed from all other lists they chose.
Selection from each list follows admission preferences first, then date and time of registration. Property descriptions, including bedroom sizes and amenities, are available at lacda.org's site-based waiting list page, with a Spanish-language version also posted.
The LACDA, which receives HUD funding, owns 3,229 public and affordable units on 68 properties countywide, serving more than 6,650 residents. The county's Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher waiting list remains closed and is not part of this opening.
