Twenty-three dance companies and choreographers take the stage at Miles Playhouse on Friday and Saturday as the 17th Annual MixMatch Dance Festival opens Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Hart Pulse Dance Company hosts the three-show run at the city-owned venue at 1130 Lincoln Blvd., bringing together contemporary, hip-hop, jazz and classical works from artists spanning Southern California and beyond. Each show features a different combination of acts.

The roster reads like a cross-section of the region's dance community: Hyoin Jun, Wendy Ellis, João Ducci, Sonia Ochoa, Nicole Davis, Kate Coleman, José Argueta, C. Eule Dance, The BP Project, Honey Almazar, Dhoon Dance, Lamonte Goode, Michael Ambriz, Katarina Smouse, Daniel Stankovich, Megill & Company, Spectrum Dance Center, Pacifico Dance Company, Mosaique Dance Company, Amaterasu Dance Company, Jose Costas Contempo Ballet, Coalescence Dance Company, and Anupama & Reva Srivastava.

Dance critic Ann Haskins, writing in L.A. Dance Chronicle on Aug. 10, described the festival as "an eclectic assemblage of dance styles and genres drawn from all over SoCal."

The festival has run annually since approximately 2010. Miles Playhouse, a City of Santa Monica cultural venue, regularly hosts rental productions from local arts organizations.

Tickets are $29 total ($27 plus a $2 fee), available at hartpulsedancecompany.ticketspice.com. The city's events calendar lists Friday's show running from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Schedule:

  • Friday, Aug. 14: 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 15: 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 15: 7:30 p.m.

The Santa Monica Daily Press listed the festival alongside other community events this week, including Dine LA Restaurant Week, which runs Aug. 14–28.
