A motorist discovered a person dead in a residential driveway near the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Kansas Avenue on Monday evening, July 27, prompting a response from multiple Santa Monica Police Department units and the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.

The scene, located across from 2600 Virginia Ave. and next to a preschool, drew three to four SMPD patrol vehicles before a coroner's van arrived, according to SM Observer, which cited multiple neighborhood witnesses. The area was secured for several hours while personnel worked the scene.

Neighbors who observed the response told SM Observer the death was not being treated as a murder. One nearby resident confirmed to the outlet that the person had died but that the incident was not a homicide.

Neither the Santa Monica Police Department nor the Medical Examiner's office had released the identity of the deceased or a preliminary cause of death as of Tuesday morning, July 28. The SMPD has not issued a public statement about the incident.

The incident comes during a violent month in Santa Monica. Two confirmed homicides occurred in July before this death: a fatal shooting near the Santa Monica Pier on Monday, July 20, and a killing at an assisted living facility on Pico Boulevard on Saturday, July 25, according to Patch. Authorities have indicated the Virginia Avenue death is separate from those investigations.
