Sunset Park residents who want a say in what becomes of the 192-acre Santa Monica Airport site can join their neighbors Tuesday, July 7, at 7 p.m. on Zoom. The meeting is free and open to all. Zoom Meeting ID: 491 742 7905. Passcode: 126827. One-tap mobile: (669) 900-6833.

Friends of Sunset Park, the volunteer civic group that has represented the neighborhood since 1989, is hosting its monthly open meeting with the Airport to Park Project listed as a key discussion item. The group is encouraging residents to participate as the city moves toward environmental review of the planned park conversion.

The airport is scheduled to close December 31, 2028. Santa Monica voters approved Measure LC in 2014 with 60 percent support, restricting the land to parks and recreation uses unless voters approve an alternative. The City Council directed planners in July 2025 to develop a Measure LC-compliant Great Park, and by March 2026 the city had released a draft Framework Diagram synthesizing input from 87 public meetings and more than 12,100 online survey responses, according to Amber Richane, the city's principal design and planning manager. The engagement process was in Phase 3B as of that March update.

Beyond the airport discussion, Tuesday's meeting includes updates from SMPD Neighborhood Resource Officer Isabel Pardo and Crime Prevention Coordinator Halima Lebron. According to FOSP's website, theft from vehicles remains the No. 1 crime in Sunset Park, with catalytic converter theft also flagged as a concern.

The group operates independently after its board voted in early 2026 to decline the city's Neighborhood Organization Grant, citing new restrictions including a prohibition on political endorsements and a requirement to collect demographic data from members. FOSP said it will rely on member support to continue informing and advocating for Sunset Park residents.
