The girls' pool locker room at Santa Monica High School is closed until further notice after a small fire broke out there Wednesday, Oct. 21.
No students were inside the locker room when the fire started around 5:07 p.m., Principal Marae Cruce told families in a message, first reported by the Santa Monica Sun. School staff responded immediately and extinguished the flames before Santa Monica Fire Department crews arrived.
Firefighters came shortly afterward to clear smoke and investigate the scene, Cruce said.
The fire left smoke damage on a corner wall of the locker room. Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) facilities workers were onsite clearing the remaining smoke that evening.
"I would like to thank the Santa Monica Fire Department who responded shortly after quickly to help clear the smoke and investigate the scene," Cruce wrote in her message to Samohi families.
The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
Cruce said Samohi coaching staff will reach out to the girls with additional information during the closure. No reopening timeline has been announced.
The fire is the latest safety concern to touch SMMUSD campuses, though the incident appears to have been contained quickly and without injury, according to the principal's account.
Residents who witness a fire or emergency in Santa Monica can call 911.
