Santa Monica College's Theatre Arts Department opens Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" on Friday, Sept. 25, beginning a six-performance run at the Main Stage on the college's main campus.
Dr. Adrianne Harrop, an SMC Theatre Arts faculty member, directs the production, the Santa Monica Sun reported. The play is set in 1692 Puritan-era Salem, Massachusetts, where accusations of witchcraft spiral a town into paranoia and turn neighbors against neighbors. Miller wrote it in the 1950s as a McCarthy-era allegory.
The production earned a spot on the Arthur Miller Society's national upcoming-productions page, one of a handful of college stagings listed alongside professional theater companies across the country.
Evening performances begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25, Sept. 26, Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. Sunday matinees start at 2 p.m. on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4.
All shows take place at the Theatre Arts Main Stage, 1900 Pico Blvd. Parking is free.
Advance tickets are $28 for general admission, $25 for seniors 62 and older, and $18 for SMC students, staff and faculty, according to the college's Theatre Arts performances page. Tickets purchased at the door cost an additional $3. Buyers can order online at the college's ticket page or by phone at 310-434-4265.
The department wrapped its summer run of "The SpongeBob Musical: Theatre for Young Audiences Edition" in July. "The Crucible" is the first of four fall productions.
Next is "Animal Farm," running Oct. 16 through Oct. 25 on the Studio Stage at $15 general admission. "Ernesto! A Flamenco Folly" follows on the Main Stage in November and December at $28 general admission, and a Musical Theatre Workshop closes the season in December at $15.
