The man fatally shot by a Santa Monica police officer on Aug. 22 has been identified as Michael Rodriguez, 44.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office released Rodriguez's name on Sunday, Aug. 30, more than a week after the shooting in the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue near Palisades Park. The location sits between Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard, across from The Georgian Hotel. Rodriguez died of a gunshot wound to the chest, the office determined.

Officers had responded to a report of domestic violence in the park at 12:49 p.m. that Saturday, according to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD). Rodriguez had no connection to that call. According to a police statement issued Aug. 22, Rodriguez charged at officers with a knife while they were interviewing witnesses at the scene. One officer fired a single shot.

Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics treated Rodriguez at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob told reporters a "rather large knife" was recovered at the scene, as Patch reported. Jacob said there were indications Rodriguez may have been homeless and may have been new to the area. The SMPD said Rodriguez was not previously known to officers. The medical examiner's office did not release Rodriguez's city of residence.

In a statement on Aug. 24, two days after the shooting, Jacob addressed the incident's toll on the department and community. "Any incident resulting in the loss of life is significant … We recognize the impact this has on the deceased's family and those who knew him, our community and the personnel who responded," Jacob said at the time, as the Santa Monica Lookout reported.

The officer who fired was not injured. The officer's name has not been released.

The shooting is being investigated under standard department protocol. The city said as of Aug. 26 that it planned to release body-worn camera footage within the next few weeks, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press. No specific date for that release has been announced.
